We are no better than ourselves

The problem that is more serious, which arises at the time you are shaping yourself, when building your own identity, reacting to whatever the universe sets across your path; the real issue is not the matter of shaping to an outside world or other people’s expectations. This is not about shaping into whatever the rest of the world wants you to be. Because that is your own voluntary choice.

The real issue that is way beyond your ability to choose is in fact the shaping of yourself in accordance to what you believe yourself to be. For this is beyond any reasonable choice. It just happens when you least expect it. Kind of sneaks up on you, the sneaky bastard, you! Each one of us has this elemental, cruel, high-standing moral that forces us to be ourselves in pretty much all the situations we must face in life. So you have to live with the consequences of being yourself all the time, either your actions are good or bad, either they affect you or they end up affecting others.

Do you consider yourself to be a good person? Then you shall be one in everything you do. Do you think that in the same circumstance someone else would have been evil? That is not your moral problem. If you had been evil, things would have turned to your advantage? That is not something you can even begin to imagine because you simply would not do it, no matter how many times it tempted you.

On the other hand; do you think you are a rotten apple? Then you are capable of nothing but terrible things, even if some of them have positive collateral effects that were completely unexpected to you.

That is not even important, though. There are good people, bad people and so-so people everywhere in this absurd world. But you can be sure of one thing and one thing only: whatever you do, you can not be better than yourself. That is all you will ever be.
